What is CBD?

CBD: The Medicinal Alternative You've Been Looking For

CBD has burst into the wellness scene in recent years. While CBD is legal throughout the United States, each state has implemented its own laws related to growing and selling. If you happen to live in a state where CBD is legal, it’s not hard to spot businesses on nearly every corner promoting it. From lotions to coffee, CBD is being infused in a variety of products and sold just about anywhere. But many people are still unsure of what CBD is and are adamant about trying it. CBD is a safe and non-addictive alternative to pharmaceutical drugs that can benefit your health greatly.

What is CBD?

CBD stands for Cannabidiol which is a naturally occurring compound in the cannabis plant and a type of phytocannabinoid. Cannabis plants are recognized either as hemp or marijuana but it is important to note that they are not interchangeable terms as there are distinctions between the two. Cannabis plants contain more than a hundred types of phytocannabinoids, each with their own effects and health benefits. In fact, cannabis has been used for centuries in traditional medicine and has recently been the focal point of many studies for its medicinal properties.

How Does CBD Work?

The human body has a regulatory system called the endocannabinoid system (ECS) that is responsible for controlling various functions such as pain, appetite, sleep, and immune system response. As part of the ECS, the body produces neurotransmitters called endocannabinoids, similar to the compounds found in the cannabis plant, that bind to cannabinoid receptors. CBD works by mimicking or augmenting the effects of these endocannabinoids.

The Difference Between CBD and THC

The most recognized phytocannabinoid in cannabis is tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). THC contains various therapeutic properties, however, it is more famous for the intoxicated feeling, or “high,” that it produces when consumed. Despite CBD being closely related to THC, CBD is not psychoactive. This means that CBD does not produce an intoxicated feeling, or high, because it has only small traces of THC. In fact, the legal limit for THC in CBD is 0.3% and in some products, it contains no detectable traces of THC at all.

CBD Isolate vs. CBD Full-Spectrum Oil

CBD can be extracted from the cannabis plant and used to create full-spectrum CBD oil or CBD Isolate. Full-spectrum CBD means that the product contains a full range of cannabinoids, not just CBD. The concern with full-spectrum CBD is the possibility of trace amounts of THC. By federal law, hemp-derived CBD may not contain more than 0.3% THC. A percentage this low would not be potent enough to produce any psychoactive effects but it could potentially show up in drug tests. CBD isolate, on the other hand, is 99% pure. That means no other cannabinoids such as THC.
